This video documents the first phase of the ArtUp! Harrisburg project, which aims to address the issue of urban blight and crime within Harrisburg’s South Allison Hill setting up community designed decorative panels on blighted buildings. This project was started as part of Tri-County’s Community Action Neighborhood Revitalization Program and resulted in a collaboration with students from Penn State Harrisburg (Jeff Copus and me), the City of Harrisburg, the National Guard and Jump Street. Our project was part of an independent course on Art and Activism, we conceptualized placemaking as a process whereby people will be able to have a say in their visual environment, rooted from their community memory and built from their visions and aspirations. The project culminated in a 15′ x 7′ art installation project containing the community inspired image of a tree with community designed and painted tree leaves, finished with a headline that was selected from the focus groups – “Our Diversity is Our Strength”.
