UNFES: “We are seas, rivers, flowers, minerals, volcanoes, mountains, and compost”
Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Costa Rica

The Unión de Feministas Engendrando Nuevos Sistemas (Union of Feminists Engendering New Systems) (UNFES) was formed in 2023, with a first transborder gathering at the Penny W. Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan, and in 2024 with UNFES x La Revuelta in Guatemala City. We created this union as a space of encounter, convergence, and embodied solidarity of our practices, bodies, and territories. We invited eight Central American activist artists and curators who work toward social, racial, and gender justice, building paths alongside communities and struggles seeking human dignity.
We approach the curation of this exhibition as a narrative of our encounters, embodying ourselves and our histories with the feminist collectives and spaces we are part of and have grown with. In this case, we are eight, but in truth, we are many more. We honor and continue the path of other artists, feminists, mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors who brought us here.
The exhibition presents the result of individual and collective research processes that foster artistic collaborations and conversations aimed at making visible current and historical violence against human and non-human bodies, while questioning the official histories of our countries and the exclusions of women and dissidences in contemporary and regional art. We use various resistance tools to generate imaginaries of shared futures rooted in solidarity, healing, and liberation through art. We create community networks, public space interventions, an archive of our processes, references, inspirations, and a Central American feminist art library.
Our aspiration lies in our shared existence, large and small encounters. Sometimes we are seas crashing on distant shores; other times, we are volcanoes erupting high above. We embrace our autonomy, unite our rage, and celebrate our joy. We are our mountains, and we run like rivers, fully aware that all great bodies of water eventually meet in the sea. We will become compost: our very creation, mistakes, and possibilities are and will be another portal among many, opening the way to look at the world with feminist boldness.

La Unión de Feministas Engendrando Nuevos Sistemas (UNFES) se unió en el 2023, con un primer encuentro transfronterizo en Penny W. Stamps Gallery en la Universidad de Michigan y en 2024 en UNFES X La Revuelta en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Creamos esta unión como un espacio de encuentro, acercamiento y acuerpamiento de nuestras prácticas, cuerpos y territorios. Convocamos a ocho artistas y curadoras activistas centroamericanes quienes trabajamos por la justicia social, racial y de género acompañando a construir caminos con comunidades y luchas que buscan la dignidad humana.
Nos aproximamos a la curaduría de esta muestra como una narración de nuestros encuentros, acuerpándonos a nosotras mismas con colectivos y espacios feministas de los que somos y hemos sido parte. En este caso, somos ocho, pero en realidad somos muchas más. Honramos y seguimos construyendo el camino de otres artistas, feministas, nuestras madres, abuelas y ancestres que nos trajeron hasta aquí.
La exposición presenta el resultado de investigaciones individuales y colectivas para fomentar colaboraciones artísticas y conversaciones que buscan visibilizar violencias actuales e históricas hacia cuerpos humanos y no-humanos y para cuestionar las historias oficiales de nuestros respectivos países y las exclusiones de las mujeres y disidencias en el arte contemporáneo y de la región. Utilizamos distintas herramientas de resistencia para generar imaginarios de futuros compartidos en solidaridad, sanación y liberación por medio del arte. Creamos redes comunitarias, intervenciones en el espacio público, un archivo de nuestros procesos, referencias, inspiraciones y una biblioteca centraka de arte feminista.
Nuestra propia aspiración circula en nuestra existencia compartida, en los grandes y pequeños encuentros. A veces somos mares que chocan en diversas costas, otras veces volcanes que revientan en lo alto. Abrazamos nuestra autonomía, unimos nuestras rabias, y celebramos nuestro gozo. Somos nuestras propias montañas y corremos como ríos, con la plena conciencia que todos los grandes cuerpos de agua siempre se encuentran en el mar. Nos convertiremos en compost: nuestra mera creación, nuestros errores y oportunidades, son y serán un portal más de muchos que abrirán camino, para sincerarnos con el mundo y mirarlo con descaro feminista.
